Biennial or short-lived perennial, 15-60 cm. Stems erect or ascending, glabrous or subglabrous, often reddish, usually branched from base. Capitula few or numerous in loose corymbs. Involucre 0.75-1 cm broad; phyllaries 2-3(-4)-seriate, oblong-linear, 6-8 x 2-3 mm, obtuse, glabrous. Ray flowers 15-30, ligules lavender-blue, 4.5-6.5 x 1-2.5 mm. Disc flowers 5-6 mm. Achenes 3-4.5 mm, usually with a few hairs at base. Pappus 1-seriate, whitish, accrescent, up to 12 mm at maturity.   Temperate Eurasia (on sea coasts and inland saltmarshes) eastwards to Japan, N. America; Algeria, Palestine, N. Iran, Iraq. Euro-Sib, element. An unlocalized collection from 'Armenia' by Calvert & Zohrab appears to represent a variety of this species. Its leaves, particularly the basal ones, have ciliate margins and pubescent midribs, and the phyllaries are 4-seriate, narrower and ciliate, 1-1.75 mm broad. This specimen approximates to var. pannonicus (Jacq.) Sadler so far as pubescence is concerned, but lacks the purplish phyllaries of this variety which does not have 4-seriate phyllaries.
