subsp. ibericus (Stev.) Avetisian in Izv. Akad. Nauk Armyan. SSR 25:63 (1972). Syn: A. ibericus Stev. in Bieb., Fl. Taur.-Cauc. 2:311 (1808); A. amellus var. ibericus (Stev.) DC, Prodr. 5:231 (1836). Perennial with somewhat woody, rhizomatous rootstock. Indumentum of shortscabrous hairs and subsessile glands. Stems erect or ascending, 20-40 cm. Basal and lower cauline leaves oblanceolate, acute, 5-12 x 1-2 cm, attenuate or sub-petiolate at base, entire or indistinctly 2-3-toothed, 3-nerved; upper leaves elliptic-lanceolate, sessile. Capitula 3-12 in loose terminal corymbs. Involucre 1-1.5 cm broad; phyllaries 3-seriate, oblanceolate or oblong, 6-8 x 1.5-2.5 mm, outer adpressed-pubescent, inner ciliate, ± cartilaginous at base, herbaceous, often purplish at apex. Ray flowers 20-25; ligules mauve or lavender-blue, 9-18 x 1-3 mm. Disc flowers 5.5-6.5 mm. Achenes 3-4 mm, sparsely sericeous and minutely glandular. Pappus brownish, 5-6 mm. Fl. 6-8. Open rocky slopes, sometimes in Quercus or coniferous forests, 1300-2300 m.

  Euxine element. This subspecies, which is Transcaucasian, differs from the typical one (C. Europe to C. Asia) in having rather larger leaves which are more strongly scabrous and somewhat larger capitula with acute (not obtuse) phyllaries.
