A. caucasica Willd., Enum. Hort. Berol. Suppl. (1813). Syn: A. albida Stev. ex Bieb., Fl. Taur.-Cauc. 3: 446 (1819) sensu lato; A. alpina L. subsp. caucasica (Willd.) Briq., Prodr. Fl. Corse, 1: 48 (1913).
Perennial herb. Stems ascending to erect. Rosette leaves variable, usually obovate, petiolate or sessile, dentate with rather obtuse teeth. Stem leaves usually oblong, auriculate; all densely to sparsely stellate-canescent. Petals white, frequently drying yellowish, 12-16(-18) mm. Siliquae strongly compressed, somewhat strangulate between the seeds, strict to spreading. A complex species which can be further divided (cf. Cullen in Notes R.B.G. Edinb. 26: 188 (1965)).
1. Lower leaves tapering, without distinct petioles, usually with more than 4
teeth; pedicels straight, erect or spreading subsp. caucasica
1. Lower leaves clearly petiolate, entire to 2-4-toothed; pedicels arcuate-incurved
subsp. brevifolia
subsp. brevifolia (DC.) Cullen in Notes R.B.G. Edinb. 26: 189 (1965). Syn: A.

1: 175 (1867). Fl. 8. Rocks and screes, 1000-2900 m.
Type: Syria, Labillardiere.

W. Syria. E. Medit. (mt.) element. More southerly in its distribution than subsp. caucasica. The two subspecies are normally reasonably distinct, but in the Anti-Taurus many intermediate specimens occur; the following may be cited: B5 Kayseri: Bakir Da., 1700 m, D. 19484! Niğde: Hasan Da., 2000 m, D. 18994! B6 Maraş: Nurihak Da., 2800 m, Stn. & Hend. 5641! C6 Maraş: Ahir Da., 2000 m, Haradj. 1703! Urfa: Rum Kala'a (Halfeti), Sint. 1888: 149!
A. caucasica is not easily separable from the European A. alpina L. The main differences are the longer, narrower, more toothed stem leaves, smaller petals (6-10 mm) and shorter, less torulose siliquae of A. alpina. 2 specimens from the Dodecanese (Kalimnos, Fors.-Maj. 631! Rodhos, 1000 m, Rech. 7327!) have vegetative and fruit characters similar to those of A. alpina but flowers more like A. caucasica. They are similar to specimens from Sicily, and their status is uncertain.
