A. vulneraria L., Sp. PL 719 (1753). Annual, biennial or perennial. Lowermost leaves reduced to a terminal leaflet, or imparipinnate with the terminal leaflet much larger than the lateral leaflets; upper leaves imparipinnate, the terminal leaflet ± equalling the lateral leaflets, or much larger. Heads many-flowered, each head subtended by 2 palmatisect bracts of which the outer is larger and more deeply divided than the inner. Calyx ± inflated at anthesis, constricted at the apex, with 5 unequal teeth, the mouth oblique. Corolla yellow, red, purple, orange, whitish or parti-coloured. Legume l(-2)-seeded, when 2-seeded never constricted between the seeds. A very polymorphic species, distributed throughout Europe, N. Africa and Caucasia, extending south to Abyssinia. It may be divided into about 30 sub-species, of which 6 occur in Turkey: 1. Stem hirsute-shaggy over its whole length subsp. hispidissima 1. Stem adpressed-sericeous, at least in the upper part 2. Calyx (11-)12-14 x 4-5 mm, indumentum sericeous, usually very even and shining subsp. praepropera 2. Calyx 5-10(-ll) x 2-3.5(-4.5) mm, indumentum sub-spreading, often villous, not even and shining 3. Outer bracts divided to ½ or less of their total length; leaflets oblanceolate, forward-pointing subsp. variegata 3. Outer bracts divided to more than ½ of their total length; leaflets ± narrowly elliptic, not forward-pointing 4. Calyx 5-9 mm; plants ± prostrate or decumbent subsp. pulchella 4. Calyx 9-10(-ll) mm: plants ± erect 5. Leaves evenly distributed along the stem; calyx concolorous subsp. polyphylla 5. Leaves confined to the lower part of the stem; calyx with a red tip subsp. boissieri subsp. polyphylla (DC.) Nyman, Consp. 164 (1878). Syn: A. polyphylla (DC.) Kit. ex G. Don, Gen. Syst. 2:166 (1832); A. vulneraria L. var. polyphylla DC, Prodr. 2:170 (1825); A. schiwereckii (Ser.) Blocki in Öst. Bot. Zeitschr. 62:397 (1912). Ic: F1. URSS 11: t. 17 (1945). Stems 30-90 cm, erect, hirsute below or rarely glabrous; leaves evenly distributed along the stem, the lowest inequifoliolate with 3-7 leaflets, the uppermost equifoliolate with 11-15 leaflets; calyx concolorous, 9-11 mm; corolla yellow.
