A luxuriant specimen from A5 Samsun (5 km E. of Samsun, Tebey 878!) has large (whorled) leaves 25-28 x 15-20 mm (like those of the tetraploid A. arvensis var. kitifolia (L.) Lange, Pugill. 221 (1860-65)); however, the petal glands are sparse and (3-)4-celled as in A. foemina. but the corolla is 'poppy coloured' and only one flower has set seed. It may be a hybrid between A. foemina x A. arvensis var. arvensis (both of which resemble it in stomata size); this hybrid has been already recorded from Europe as A. x doerfleri Ronniger (see Kollmann & Feinbrun, op. cit.). In Palestine A. arvensis var. latifolia is apparently the only tetraploid race and its stomata are longer than in the diploid taxa (Kollmann & Feinbrun, op. cit.). In Turkey, however, A. arvensis var. latifolia (as morphologically defined) does not seem to occur, but the material I have assigned to A. arvensis var. caerulea has the large stomata (39.84-43-16 am) characteristic of the tetraploid A. arvensis var. latifolia. |
